UL was established in 1972 and is situated just three miles from Limerick city. There are currently over 10,000 students attending. It offers programmes like Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities, Informatics & Electronics and Science. A recent addition was Journalism and New Media; the first undergraduate journalism degree offered outside Dublin. Two postgraduate courses in journalism have also been initiated.

Courses include cooperative education and each year 2,000 students engage in paid, semi-professional work placements with over 1,600 employer organisations in Ireland and internationally. Ireland’s first graduate medical school enrolled its first students in September of 2007, enabling students to gain access to a course in medicine outside the CAO system.

UL boasts over 57 societies catering to a wide variety of interests. There are three bars on campus and Limerick city is just a short bus journey away. The University Arena encompasses the largest indoor sports hall in the country, a health and fitness clinic, and a 50-metre swimming pool. UL is also home to centres of art including the University Concert Hall, which seats over 1,000 people and is a major cultural facility of the region.
